Materials for making rope knots

yellow and blue rope

The earliest mentions of rope products date back to about the 4th millennium BC. The first ropes were made from pieces of bark, roots and vines. In Ancient Egypt and Persia, papyrus and flax began to be used for this. Such ropes strongly resemble modern ones.

Ropes made of natural fibers were used up to the XX century. For their manufacture, mainly such materials as flax, sisal leaves, jute and hemp were used. Less often, wool, silk, cane, horse or camel hair were used in production.

In the 1930s, scientists developed the composition of the basic materials for the manufacture of synthetic ropes. With their appearance, some disadvantages of vegetable rope products became obvious.

Synthetic ropes are stronger and lighter, they do not rot and do not lose strength when wet, and are also more elastic and capable of stretching. In their production, polyamide, polypropylene, polyester, polythene and several types of more modern fibers (Kevlar, spectrum, dyneema, etc.) are usually used.

Balls of twine made of artificial fibers painted in different colors are found in many hardware stores and are in considerable demand. But despite the obvious advantages, synthetic ropes have their drawbacks. For example, they are more slippery, hold knots worse and are able to accumulate static electricity charges. So ropes made of vegetable ropes are still used. For example, soft hemp ropes can be found in gyms, as they are more suitable for training children.
