The "Eight" is a simple and convenient locking knot. It does not tighten and is quite easy to untie. This knot is often used in mountaineering, because it is part of other, more complex knots.
1. Put the running end on the root so that a loop is formed.
2. Twist the loop so that the lower part overlaps the upper one. You should get a figure in the form of an eight.
3. Start pulling the running end through the loop from the bottom up. If the knot needs to be untied, stop at this stage.
4. Pass the running end through the loop completely and secure the knot.
